Ashland City Times - Wednesday Feb 8, 2006- page 4A Apostolic Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church was listed as the church of the week. Ashland City Times - Article Titled: Hallelujah! Congregation finally has place to call their own "We've only just arrived." This is the quote Bro. Hanscomb used in regards to the newly built church. The church took four years to build but it began with a single piece of land and store front services 10 years ago. Within one year, the $36,000 plot of land was completely paid off with funds from bake sales and yard sales. The church congregation which has never had more than 20 people - 70% are on a fixed income - has always reminded Bro. Hanscomb of the five loaves and two fishes. The congregation built the church theirselves. They did not use any outside contractors. That in itself was a miracle since they had no idea how to build. Another part of the miracle was that the land was paid for through yard sales and bake sales. Sis. Hanscomb had 19 yard sales and managed to raise more than $40,000 for the new church. Another miracle that happened during this time was the healing of a little prematurely born baby that weighed less than one pound. At the time of the article that baby celebrated her one year birthday as a healthy little girl. The church will continue to have yard sales but the proceeds will not all go towards the church. The money will go to a smaller church. Now that they are in their own church building, they can now start helping others. Ashland City Times - Wednesday July 6, 2005 - page 3A Church gets closer to God with new steeple Bro. Hanscomb's role has been to teach his congregation how to become closer to God, but this past week he watched as his church became closer to the Heavens. Bro. Hanscomb said that the steeple was an important addition because it points the church to God. It is a visible sign of our faith. The steeple was donated to them by a local Baptist couple. Originally, though, a Pleasant View Baptist Church donated a steeple but it did not fit the structure of the building properly. So, the Ashland City church donated the steeple to a church in Dunlap, TN where it fit their structure perfectly. Many other miracles and blessings came during the construction of the church. One local man donated and installed the carpets in the Sunday School Department without charge. A local Church of Christ provided light fixtures. Someone else donated the paint needed for the interior of the church. The Hanscomb's went to have a copy machine repaired and the the store donated a working copy machine to the church. There was another time during the construction that it was determined that the lower level had been built incorrectly. Upon hearing about the problem, several people who didn't attend the church came and fixed the problem. And the list goes on. Thanks you is given to all those in Ashland City and all the churches who helped with the construction of the church. Pentecostal Voice of Tennessee - May 2001 - Volume 38 - Number 1 Cover Story - The Birth Of A Church by Mike Worrell This article was written about the birth of the Ashland City Church which is now called Apostolic Tabernacle. On Easter Sunday 2001, Pastor Doug Hanscomb and the saints in Ashland City turned the first shovel of dirt that began the construction of their new church building. That Easter Sunday service was a memorable one for all who attended. Superintendent Wayne Chester preached the morning service. Afterwards, everyone drove out to the church property where Bro. Chester officiated the ground breaking service. After the ground breaking service, everyone went to Bills Catfish for Lunch then back to the store front church for an afternoon service. The Ashland City church began in the spring of 1995, when Bro. Doug Hanscomb, under the Lord's leading, was installed as the first pastor of the Ashland City United Pentecostal Church. On July 30, 1995 Bro. Ron Becton, pastor of First United Pentecostal Church in West Nashville, TN. officiated the service which gave the Ashland City church "Home Missions" status. Four and a half acres of land on Bearwallow Road was purchased in the fall on 1995. Within a year the land was paid in full. Thank You is extended to all those who gave financially and to those who donated to the yard sale. Over the past five and a half years Bro. Hanscomb has taught us to love and embrace the holiness standards that were taught in the first century church. Hebrews 12:14 states- "And without holiness, no man shall see the Lord." Pentecostal Voice of Tennessee - April 2005 - Volume 41 - Number 12 Cover Story - The Miracle Church by Mary Hanscomb This featured article spoke of the miracles performed at 1410 Bearwallow Road. Today God still performs miracles just like he did when he walked up the earth years ago. This small congregation had held services in a small rental space. Attendance was low with only six to sometimes twenty people most of whom was senior citizens on fixed incomes. The first miracle was the Lord leading Bro. Hanscomb to find and acquire the land for $36,000 and having it paid for within one year. There were many hurdles to overcome with each building stage. Every time supplies were needed God provided the specific supplies needed or money to buy them. God also always provided the volunteers needed to get the job done. The whole community came together to help with the construction. The Baptist, Church of Christ, Catholic, Nazarene, merchants in the area and even strangers came at the right time. With the help of everyone coming together the carpet was installed, interior decorating completed, porch was completed, light fixtures donated, and labor for lighting donated. Another miracle was the money raised through yard sales for the construction of the building and for other needs. From the yard sales alone, the ladies of the church was able to raise over $40,000. Bro. Hanscomb's healing was another miracle. He was working on a scaffold inside the construction when it fell. He fell 12 feet and the scaffold landed on top of him. God protected him from serious injury. God again protected and healed him in October 2003 when he became very sick. After 3 years, Bro. Hanscomb and his 2 to 3 helpers realized that they had done all that they could do and that someone else would need to come in and complete the work. God called Donnie Bledsoe and his workers to come in and they completed the building to meet code requirements. It took 4 years to complete the church construction and on November 13, 2004 the dedication service was held. Several from the community came to show their support including the County Judge, the Sheriff, and a representative of the Police Department. Attendance now runs about 30 and one Sunday the attendance count was 46. Praise be to God. The appraisal for the church is $350,000 and about 75% of it has already been paid. The saints in this church are praying for the greatest miracle yet. They are praying for a revival in Ashland City and for souls to be saved for God's Kingdom. Pentecostal Voice of Tennessee - January 2006 Issue - Volume 42- Number 10 Cover Story - Honor Where Honor Is Due by Wanda Hardy This cover story was written to give honor to Sis. Ollie Stanfill. She was born on October 10,1913 in Scotts Hill, TN. In 1931, when she was almost 18 years old, she was invited to an old-time tent revival. The morning her and her sister Hauta attended the tent revival they were moved so deeply that they were baptized in Jesus Name. That evening during the evening service, Sis. Ollie was filled with the precious Gift of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of Speaking in Tongues. During that same five week tent revival Collis Stanfill, was also filled with the baptism of the Holy Ghost. In 1935 they were united in marriage. A few years later hard times hit and it forced them to relocate in order to find work. They left their home church, Scotts Hill, A United Pentecostal Church, pastored by Rev L.J. Thompson and in 1939 they moved to Nashville, TN where Bro. Collis landed a job at the Werthen Bag Cotton Mill. Even though Bro. Collis was able to locate a job unfortunately they were unable to locate a United Pentecostal Church in the Nashville Area. So, they were forced to attend other denominational churches for a while. But, it wasn't long until they were able to join up with others of the same faith and they joined together for prayer meetings in one another's homes. During one of the prayer meetings, God gave Sis. Ollie the insight to talk with Rev. J. W. Wallace about the need for a United Pentecostal Church in the Nashville Area. Not too many days later, Sis. Ollie was at home and looked out her window and saw Bro. Wallace walking towards her home. When she greeted him and asked the reason for the visit he smiled and said, "We prayed that God would send someone , so here I am!". So, in 1941 the first United Pentecostal Church was begun in the Nashville Area. Bro. & Sis. Stanfill stayed at that church for many years and helped Bro. and Sis. Wallace establish that church. Since that time Bro. and Sis. Stanfill has been privileged to see many more churches started in the Nashville and surrounding areas. In May of 1996 Sis. Stanfill began attending Apostolic Tabernacle in Ashland City. On October 9, 2005 the church dedicated their new steeple, that was donated by Judge Stennette of Ashland City, in honor of Sis. Ollie Stanfill. Seventy seven were in attendance that morning including Judge Stennette and his wife. As the steeple reaches towards Heaven, so is the life of Sis. Stanfill as it continues to point towards Jesus.
