Our Church History
Bro. & Sis. Hanscomb were members of the First United Pentecostal Church in West Nashville, TN. Sis. Hanscomb was content and comfortable in that church. Bro. Hanscomb felt the call of God to go to Ashland City and pastor the work there. Sis. Hanscomb told her husband, "No Way". They had already been involved in starting a home missions work in Fairview, TN and she was not interested in being involved in another home missions work. The home missions work in Fairview, TN had come about with a lot of hard work and the church bills had to be paid for by peanut brittle that Sis. Hanscomb made and sold. They were there for 8 or 9 years before God lead them back to the First United Pentecostal Church. A few months before Bro. & Sis. Hanscomb accepted the call to go to Ashland City, they were privileged to visit a small church in Tennessee. That church had steel chairs and worn out carpet. Sis. Hanscomb felt God's presence and His anointing as He placed a renewed burden on her heart to work once again in a home missions church. To see Sis. Hanscomb today, you would never believe that she once struggled with the calling to go to Ashland City. When you talk to her about her burden for the church, tears fill her eyes. She see's the blessings in what God is doing. There are a lot of people that wouldn't feel comfortable in a larger church. Some people just need a "family oriented" style church where everyone shares in your blessings as well as in your trials. We cry together, rejoice together, and pray together. We may not have a lot of money but God makes up for it with our love for one another and our love for Him. Sis. Hanscomb tells the story of a recent experience at a local health club. She had started going to a small women's health club a couple times a week. She knew that the health club had another location in a bigger part of town that offered a lot more equipment for the same price. She started thinking about how awesome it would be to go to the bigger location. But, then God quickened her heart and she began to cry. If she started going to the larger location then they would not call and personally ask about her when she missed. They wouldn't care about her family and situations that she was going through, they wouldn't ask about the church, and they would be too busy to take the time to give that personal touch that the smaller location gave to each of the ladies that walk through their doors. God just showed her an inside view of how a lot of people feel about smaller churches. When people see a large church that is beautiful and has a lot of activities and ministries and music and singing that is never off key, most people will gravitate towards the larger church. Compared to the smaller church, a bigger church can sometimes look more enticing. They do not always get the personal touch and attention that they would sometimes get in a smaller family oriented church, that is something special and unique to a small church. Sis. Hanscomb prays that she never looses sight of those who need the touch of someone who cares.
